Our Story

Set in the rolling hills of Loudoun County, Belmont Country Club is rich in history. Our club was established on land once owned by Lord Fairfax. The stately Manor House was built between 1799 and 1802 by Ludwell Lee, son of Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Manor House has long been a place of hospitality and celebration, welcoming guests such as Presidents John Quincy Adams and James Madison. Among its notable owners were Mr. & Mrs. Edward B. McLean; he was the son of the owner and publisher of the Washington Post;, and she once famously owned the Hope Diamond.


Belmont has evolved over the years from a historic estate into a vibrant country club community, where an Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course and refined amenities bring timeless tradition into the modern day while honoring our storied past.

Our Beginnings

The Manor House was built by Ludwell Lee, son of Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Serving as aide-de-camp to General Lafayette, Lee built Belmont on land inherited through his wife, Flora Lee. The home’s elegant design and fine detailing place it among the region’s most distinguished historic estates.

A Visit From Lafeyette

General Lafayette visits Belmont and donates the ornate mantels that remain today.

The Mercer School Era

Following Ludwell Lee’s death in 1836, Belmont was sold to Miss Margaret Mercer, daughter of a former Maryland governor, who operated a school in the house.

New Ownership: George Kephart

Purchased from Mercer’s heirs by George Kephart, owner of nearby Coton plantation.

The Staunton Years

Acquired by Frederick M. Staunton, former governor of Kansas.

The Ferguson Renovation

Bought by John Scott and Elizabeth Ferguson of Pittsburgh; architect T. Kent Roberts modernizes the estate.

The McLean Family Residence

Purchased by Edward and Evelyn Walsh McLean of Washington, D.C. Mrs. McLean famously owned the Hope Diamond.

Belmont as a Horse Farm

The McLeans’ Belmont operates as a renowned horse farm before being sold to Secretary of War Patrick J. Hurley.

The Clarke Stewardship

Acquired by Washington attorney George C. Clarke and family, who later retain life interest in the property.

Preservation and Recognition

Purchased by IBM, later designated on the Virginia Landmarks Register (1976) and National Register of Historic Places (1980).

Restoration and Revival

Restored by Toll Brothers and reopened as Belmont Country Club; Arnold Palmer visits in 2002.

A New Era with Invited

Belmont Country Club acquired by Invited, ushering in a new chapter of private club life and community.
