Our Story

The story of University Club began in 1896, when a group of eight men and thirteen women formed the College Graduate Club to exchange ideas and discuss the important issues of their time. That spirit of dialogue and intellectual curiosity inspired the creation of The University Club a decade later as a club to promote literature, art, and culture among its members.

Today, from our setting atop Symphony Towers, we continue to be a hub for connection and collaboration in San Diego, where professionals, creatives, and civic leaders come together to share ideas and inspire the next generation of change-makers.

The organization formally incorporates itself as a private corporation dedicated to promoting literature, art, and culture among its members.

A Space of Its Own

The Club moves from a rented mansion to its own clubhouse.

Major Facility Redevelopment

The Club’s original building is demolished and replaced with a modern facility that offers a gym.

The Invited Era Begins in Symphony Towers

The Club moves to Symphony Towers and becomes part of the Invited network (formerly ClubCorp), expanding member benefits and access to an international network of private clubs.

Multimillion-Dollar Transformation

A top-to-bottom renovation reimagines the Club for today’s leaders and innovators, unveiling refreshed dining, social, and workspaces.
